Classic Victorian Collie club

A small group of people is interested in recovering and preserving a general type of collie that was common before 1900, and often called the scotch collie. The scotch type range is shown in photographs of early show Collies, prior to 1900 and shortly after, as well as in many paintings and illustrations from the Victorian era. This scotch collie type was very variable, but distinguishing features were a moderate coat, larger eyes, more stop, and wider backskull than the modern show Collie of the U.S.

In addition to this type range, the scotch collie is remembered for its character, described by John Holmes in The Farmer's Dog.

There are several other types of Collie quite distinct from the Border Collie in that they are 'loose-eyed' workers. Most of these are native to Scotland and include the old-fashioined Scotch Collie from which the modern show Collie is descended. Now practically extinct, I have clear recollections of several of these dogs in my youth and believe that, in my early efforts to walk, I was assisted by one. They were all easy-going, level headed dogs, useful but not flashy workers, and quite willing to lie about the place when there was nothing better to do. Personally I think it is a great pity that this type has been practically exterminated by the increasing popularity of 'strong-eyed' dogs. For all-round farm work they were often far more use..." Our small group believes that this wonderful character, so well suited for both working and companion, is still well represented within the Collie breed. We believe that the old scotch collie physical type range is recoverable from the Collie gene pool. We would like to form a club with the purpose of reestablishing and preserving this physical type range, in otherwise healthy, sound Collies exhibiting the Holmesian character. We would like to work with current Collie breeders, worldwide, who share our concern about health, soundness, function and character and who may be able to help our members find quality Collies that exhibit some or all the old scotch features.
